Support Your Team By Showing Up, Not Throwing Up

Philadelphia Phillies fans continue to "distinguish" themselves in unique ways. Today's police blotter includes mention of a man arrested at the Phillies game against the Nationals for "unruly behavior." Those charges don't quite capture the scope of the crime that 21-year-old Matthew Clemmens of Cherry Hill, NJ allegedly committed.

According to the report on ESPN via the Associated Press, young Clemmens stuck his finger down his throat and intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl and her father.

Unfortunately for Clemmens, the recipient of the contents of his stomach turned out to be an off-duty police captain. Clemmens was arrested on the spot and later charged with assault and harassment after he punched and again intentionally vomited on the police captain and another arresting officer.

First off, let's get it together Phillie fans. You celebrated at last year's World Series banner-raising ceremony by starting a small riot (see the video toward the end of my post from April 2009) and you are routinely called out as the most unruly fans across multiple sports for perpetrating such crimes as throwing batteries at J.D. Drew and reigning down boos and snowballs on poor Santa Claus.

There are better ways to show support for your team.

Secondly, I'm no lawyer, but I believe Clemmens will probably manage to get off on some technicality. Sadly, lots of people vomit quite uncontrollably while watching the Washington Nationals.

No kidding, man! I'd like to think this was an isolated drunken transgression, but even still, it was a really weird and disgusting drunken transgression.
